About the Role
Gateshead Council is seeking a dedicated and empathetic Social Worker to join our specialist Disabled Children Team. This role is perfect for a practitioner who is passionate about promoting independence, ensuring safety, and improving life outcomes for children and young people with complex disabilities and additional needs.
You will work closely with families to provide tailored support, ensuring that disabled children are empowered to reach their full potential within a safe and nurturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
Specialist Assessments: Undertake comprehensive Child and Family Assessments, specifically tailored to the unique needs of children with physical disabilities, learning disabilities, and complex medical needs.
Child in Need & Protection: Manage a varied caseload, including Child in Need (CiN) plans, Child Protection (CP) planning, and Looked After Children (LAC) procedures where relevant to the service.
Co-Production: Work closely with children, their families, and carers to co-produce robust, individualized support packages and short-break provisions.
Multi-Agency Collaboration: Partner with health professionals, education providers, occupational therapists, and SEN teams to ensure a holistic, joined-up approach to care.
Requirements
Qualifications: Degree in Social Work and a current Social Work England (SWE) registration.
Experience: Proven post-qualifying experience within Children's Services, with a strong preference for prior experience in a Disabled Children or Children with Disabilities team.
Skills: Deep understanding of the Children Act 1989/2004 and the Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act 1970. Excellent communication skills, particularly using non-verbal or adapted communication tools.
