Job title: Lab assistant

Working Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Salary: £13.46 per hour
RESPONSIBILITIES:
... - To undertake the day to day work programme in the laboratory to agreed deadlines and quality standards ensuring all samples delivered are handled according to current standard operating procedures
- Receive goods delivered at the back door, transferring those containing samples to accessioning and notifying other departments / individuals that they have received goods
- Unpack and process all samples that have an intact Chain of Custody, identifying flawed samples whose Chain of Custody is not intact or have other flaws and report these using the flaws process
- Aliquot samples into analyzer racks maintaining a steady throughput to the screening lab, place processed samples onto the temporary storage racks
- Transfer screen positive 'A' samples into confirmation trays for analysis the next working day (urgent samples will need processing the same day), transfer 'B' bottles to freezer for long term storage freezer
- Scan CoC forms to document management system after completion of each batch of samples
- Discard old 'negative' sample batches on a daily basis
- Process samples through the freezer room. Discarding time expired trays, and transferring 'new' trays to position allocated by LIMS
- Perform general housekeeping tasks identified by the Accessioning Supervisor and/or Laboratory manager. These include but are not exclusive to the tasks listed below:-
- Maintain freezer room in a tidy and safe condition by stacking trays in a safe manner and removal of excess ice
- Transfer sample package waste from lab to bins outside on a regular basis, all waste to be cleared by the end of the day
- Maintaining the reception areas inside and out in a tidy and safe manner by removal of waste and notifying other departments of uncollected goods
Health & Safety Responsibilities
- The Health and safety at Work Act 1974 and the management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 apply
- Taking reasonable care of their own and other's health and safety
- Co-operating with their employers
- Carrying out activities in accordance with training and instructions
- Informing the employer of any risks no matter how minor they may appear
