        An exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Server Engineer to join Kent and Essex Police, whilst they embark on an applications migration project.Role: Senior Server EngineerDuration: ASAP for 9 MonthsPay Rate: Up to £530 a day UmbrellaContract: Full time - 5 days/weekLocation: Maidstone/Chelmsford with some Working From Home flexibility Main Purpose of the role:Provide high quality expert technical support and advisory services on server support operations and implement transition requirements within either Kent Police or Essex Police, maintaining and developing the overall IT landscape, investigating, diagnosing and resolving the full range of server related faults and problems, monitoring and managing performance and status, evaluating contingencies and risks, working with users, other staff, stakeholders and suppliers as appropriate, in order to maintain server infrastructure performance, maximise the effective use of IT systems and deliver optimum operational and business benefits.Main responsibilities:- Deliver high quality expert technical support and advisory services for users throughout the Force in respect of server transition and support operations, undertake the diagnosis of the full range of server related faults and problems, including those of a complex nature, providing solutions or work arounds, evaluating and advising on risks, identifying contingencies, making recommendations and supporting the maintenance of IT systems, in order to optimise performance, ensuring high standards of service delivery and the maximum availability of IT services.- Undertake a broad range of information system changes relating to server support throughout the Force, assisting with change management initiatives and programmes, monitoring performance and status, problem solve, escalating as appropriate, and consulting with suppliers, in order that users have access to their systems at all times so as to support business and policing operations.- Analyse and report on service and component availability, reliability, maintainability, serviceability, performance and security, including proposals for improvement, utilising appropriate management systems software and appropriate analysis equipment to collect load statistics and model performance, ensuring the effective development and delivery of services that meet the current and future levels of operational performance throughout the Force.- Provide technical advice, guidance and support to release programmes and packages in respect of servers and applications, consulting with designers, project staff and developers as appropriate, including external suppliers, undertake testing, evaluation and validation processes, in order to support the efficient movement of releases to test and live environments and enable the controlled and effective handover to users.- Provide for the introduction of new/updates to servers and associated operating system configurations, liaising with users and delivering an expert technical and advisory service, ensuring that the performance, capacity, availability and security of all server based IT systems meet or exceed the need of the business.- Respond to server support enquiries by users over a broad range of server related problems, including complex enquiries, making modifications to system parameters, applying patches or fixes, developing work-arounds or site-specific enhancements as appropriate, ensuring that all work is carried out and documented in accordance with required standards, methods and procedures.- Assist with the maintenance of open and productive communication strategies for server support and development services, analysing trends and events and advising on customer feedback and satisfaction measures, supporting consultation processes, attending meetings and presenting information as required, in order to facilitate good customer relations and ensure that levels of service and support matches or exceeds user expectations.Necessary experience:The Senior Server Engineer will require a technical practitioner background with at least 3 years experience with a thorough understanding of developments in server and infrastructure administration or equivalent recent industry experience. Possession of Applications Management -Practitioner (Information Systems Examination Board) and/or NVQ Level 4/5 for Information/Communication Technology Professionals qualifications would be desirable. The post holder will also need the following SFIA Skills. Release Management at Level 4, Systems Integration at Level 4 and Testing at Level 4.The post holder will have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the Forces IT infrastructure architecture, including the framework and principles on which servers, networks and operating systems are based e.g. Windows Server/Vista,7, UNIX, LINUX, Oracle, SQL-Server, TDM, ATM, TCP/IP. A high level of competency is required in release management, incorporating the use of the processes, systems and functions to package, build, test and deploy changes and updates which are bounded as "releases" into the "production" environment.The Senior Server Engineer will be highly proficient in configuration management including hardware devices, data management, back-up and storage technology and techniques, computer programs, documentation and telecommunications services required to deliver an effective IT service. The post holder will also require a thorough knowledge and understanding of components management and business continuity planning.
