Position 1: Section 117 Mental Health Social Worker
Summary of Job
The position focuses on driving excellence in support planning, reviews, and community integration for individuals subject to Section 117 aftercare.
The successful candidate leads on Section 117 statutory responsibilities, balancing legislative compliance with creative, strengths-based social work.
The post holder acts as a key point of expertise within the service, shaping integrated local authority procedures and mentoring wider team colleagues.
Duties & Responsibilities
Leads Care Act Reviews for individuals under Section 117 across community, residential, nursing, or supported living settings.
Delivers timely care management by maintaining regular reviews and monitoring ongoing eligibility for Section 117 aftercare.
Manages formal discharges from Section 117 in close partnership with the Integrated Care Board (ICB).
Facilitates prompt hospital discharges through collaborative planning, meetings, and funding agreements with health partners.
Co-produces person-centred support plans using strengths-based approaches to promote independence and reduce reliance on formal care.
Mentors the wider team by providing expert guidance, advice, and training regarding Section 117 of the Mental Health Act.
Maintains accurate commissioning and care records by uploading all documentation to the electronic LAS system.
Contributes to policy development by helping shape integrated Section 117 procedures and local best practices.
Candidate Requirements
Qualifications: Degree-level Social Work qualification and active registration with Social Work England.
Experience: Minimum of 2 years post-qualification experience, including substantial knowledge of Section 117 and mental health legislation.
Employment Package & Benefits (All Posts)
- Salary: £39,862 - £45,091 per annum
- Hours: Full-time, 36 hours per week. Core hours: Monday-Wednesday 8:30-17:00, Thursday 8:30-16:30, Friday 8:30-16:00.
- Leave: Generous entitlement of 28 days annual leave (rising with long service), plus bank holidays and a holiday purchase scheme.
- Development: Enjoys peer supervision, standard clinical supervision, and joint training with Pennine Care Mental Health Services. Local Government Pension Scheme available.
